David will provide an overview of the development of jazz and jazz recordings, utilizing a selection of 15 tracks from his jazz collection. We begin with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, whose 1917 recordings are the first ever by a jazz group. We continue on with famous 1920’s groups such as King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and other stars from that period. We then move on to the revival of traditional jazz in the 1940’s – Sidney Bechet, Bunk Johnson, Django Reinhardt, etc. For the 1960’s to today, David have selected recent bands still playing in the traditional style for comparison. The presentation will include photos of the bands and key musicians to accompany the selections being played.
