We do not eat the same food that our great grandparents ate, nor will our great grandchildren eat what we do.

Population growth and Climate Change are demanding dramatic changes in the manner in which we grow and access what we eat.

In this lecture, Mark will discuss how he thinks we will feed the world in the year 2050 (just 25 years from now) without jeopardizing issues such as the healthiness, the taste and the price of our food, nor quite frankly the joy we derive from eating.

More food will be grown in carefully controlled environments.

Genetically modified foods will be ever more common and will allow farmers to produce greater yields, use fewer pesticides and grow foods in new environments (e.g. further north as climates warm).

The notion of using new technologies such as Synthetic Biology to create real food that is healthy, tasty and cheaper to produce is quickly becoming a reality.

The challenges to our food supply are enormous but so is the excitement of adapting to new technologies and creating foods that are healthy (safe), tasty and affordable.

Mark was born and educated in Montreal where he received his Ph.D. From McGill University in 1970. He went on to hold increasingly senior research and administrative positions at Harvard Medical School in Boston, the College de France in Paris, The University of Alberta in Edmonton where he rose to the position of Associate Dean of Medicine and the John P. Robarts Research Institute in London Ontario where he was President, CEO and Scientific Director. He moved to Toronto in 2007 to head up the Ontario Genomics Institute. He retired in 2017. Over the course of his career, he has been President, CEO and Chair of many public and private entities with employee counts ranging from 5 to 600 and annual budgets ranging from less than a $1M to more than $40M per annum. Between 2000 and 2004 he served on the MERCK USA Scientific Advisory Leadership Board. In recognition of his leadership, Mark has been awarded both the ORDER of ONTARIO and the ORDER of CANADA.
